Live CPR Challenge - 4th September 2024

The Live CPR Challenge was a highly successful event aimed at enhancing CPR skills and promoting patient safety, organised by department of Emergency Medicine, Malabar Medical College Ulliyeri, Kozhikode. It was conducted as a part of world patient safety awareness programme, held on 04th September 2024. The program was inaugurated by Dr Dineesh Kumar, Deputy Medical Superintendent of Malabar Medical College Ulliyeri Kozhikode. 

The live CPR challenge was a successful initiative aimed at enhancing CPR skills and promoting patient safety. The competition, which utilized high-fidelity mannequins provided by Medlern Heartcode, engaged participants in real-time, high-stakes scenarios to test their CPR techniques. High-fidelity mannequins were used to simulate realistic emergency situations, allowing for a more accurate assessment of participant’s CPR performance. These mannequins provided realistic feedback on CPR performance, including hand placement, depth, rate, recoil and chest compression fraction. 

The competition was divided into two rounds: the preliminary round, focusing on delivering high-quality CPR, and the finals, emphasizing the two-rescuer adult CPR which includes compressions and ventilation. Total 160 participants who took part in the CPR challenge from various department of our institute including doctors, nursing staff, nursing students. 10 of the participants selected for final round based on their performance in preliminary round. The top performers included Amitha Raj, an Emergency Medicine Staff Nurse, who won first prize; Dr. Sayooj, House Surgeon, who secured second prize; and Binju, Nursing Student, who achieved third prize. Cash prizes were distributed by Dr Sudha Secretary and Medical Director, and Dr Kanniyan Binub, Deputy Medical Director of Malabar Medical College Ulliyeri Kozhikode. Dr. Rajeesh R (Assistant Professor, Emergency Medicine), Dr. Deepak R (Senior Resident, Emergency Medicine) and Mr. Varun Krishnan (Emergency Medicine Department coordinator) contributed significantly to the successful execution of the programme. 

The event highlighted importance of high quality CPR skills and highlighted the critical role of CPR in patient safety. Recommendations for future events include increasing the number of participants and providing more diverse scenarios.
